The 10th Annual National Book Festival, sponsored by the Library Congress, attracted 150,000 book lovers to the National Mall on September 25, 2010, breaking previous attendance records. Standing room only events allowed festival goers to hear and interact with their favorite poets, authors, and illustrators. Over the course of the festival’s ten years, organizers estimate nearly 1 million book lovers have come together to celebrate the written word in its various forms.

Popular pavilions at the festival included Fiction & Mystery, Children, History & Biography, Poetry & Prose, Let’s Read America, Teens & Children, and the Pavilion of the State. Visitors, authors and publishing professionals filled the top Washington hotels near the Mall. Participating authors in 2010 included Isabel Allende , Suzanne Collins, Pat Mora, Laura Bush, Scott Turow, Peter Straub, Martha Grimes, Spike Mendelsohn, Ken Follett, Jonathan Franzen, Jane Smily, Judith Viorst, Gordon S. Wood, Timothy Egan, Elizabeth Kostova, Micehle Norris, Brad Meltzer, David Remnick, Anchee Min, Jules Feiffer, Diana Gabaldon, Wil Haygood, and Craig Robinson.

Some of the festivals highlights includes the Veterans History Project, the Digital Bookmobile, and the launch of Gateway to Knowledge a traveling exhibit which will visit 60 communities across the country.
