Taking a road trip can be fun for you and boring for your kids. While not all of them will hate to be stuck in the car watching the scenery go by, most of them will be. What this usually means is that when you are planning your big road trip, you will need to pack more than just your city maps and road atlas, you will also need to pack something to keep the kids entertained. This can take the form of a number of things, such as road games like road sign bingo , I spy, sing-a-longs, board games made for the road, such as Sorry, magnetic Checkers and Chess, and educational games that you can make up as you go along.

One way you can make up an educational game while you are in the car with the kids, is to take the road atlas that you are using, with the path you are taking drawn on it. Make a game out of having them read the road signs for various National Parks along the way. See if they can tell you by looking at the map and at their surroundings where on the map you are. This works best if you have a second parent in the car who can take the time to check if they are correct and help them out as needed without having to worry about looking away from the road. Once the kid gets good out of this, you can make a game out of being able to navigate you around new towns if you continue to take road trips with them. Not only is is useful to you and fun for them, it is also a good skill that they need.

If you find that a game like that is not enough to keep them occupied through the trip, or if there are too many kids to be able to play the game you have in mind, look on the internet for some already pre-established games . These can help you out if you don’t have a lot of time to prepare as well.
