Portland has a great museum for the entire family to visit, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry located at 1945 Southeast Water Avenue, which is close to many Portland boutique hotels and within walking distance from most.

Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), offers halls devoted to earth science, chemistry, life science, computers, hands-on exhibits, traveling exhibits, the Omnimax Theater, a planetarium, a motion simulator ride, a submarine tour, and a caf ©.

The concept of OMSI was thought of over 100 years ago in 1896 by the mind of a famed naturalist, C. Hart Merriam. After he visited a temporary exhibition of natural history specimens at city hall, he asked Portland to provide a permanent site. In the 1990′s, OMSI’s popularity with visitors surpassed the size of the facility as 600,000 people per year attended a museum built to accommodate only 100,000. So, in 1994, OMSI added 219,000 square feet, and in addition offered public tours for the USS Blueback, which is the last non-nuclear powered submarine; the cost is additional.

Today, the museum serves over 1 million visitors and is ranked as one of the top science centers in the US, plus it has an international reputation for its innovative exhibits such as the palatial digs on the Willamette River . OMSI is for the entire family to enjoy.

Current exhibition is ‘Einstein: The World Through his Eyes’, running now through September 26, 2010.
