Starting a Small Business in Canada

As with any goal that one wishes to achieve training, experience, organization and plain old hard work is what it takes to set up a small business. There is a lot to learn about dealing with the public, about relating to employees and about the aspect of running a company such as accounting and booking keeping, and whether to purchase or to rent work space My husband and I kind of learned this as we went, when we decided to move to Toronto, Canada and open up a small restaurant/cafe. We had both worked in the restaurant industry for many years, as waiters, cooks and managers, but we had never really run a business before. But what we found was that we had no idea what we were capable of accomplishing, until we just tried. The first thing we looked for was a building that would suit our needs. At that time we hadn’t purchased any restaurant equipment yet, and so we needed a place that already had most of what we needed like a stove, a refrigerator…the very basic appliances necessary to run a kitchen . We needed an abandoned restaurant. We were referred by a good friend to a Canadian management company . We talked to them before we moved, and by the time we were in Toronto, they had six different places for us to look at. We chose the smallest one, for a couple of reasons. For one, it was small, and we wanted to make sure that even if we were only serving 10 tables at a time, those 10 tables would be well taken care of. We wanted to succeed in a small way, before moving to success in bigger ways. And we also chose the smaller one due to the fact that there was a small garden in the back, which was in need of some tending to, but it was still there none the less. It has been 7 years since we opened that first cafe , and while we do now, have a bigger restaurant, a bigger success, we remain in the original location because of what it continues to represent to us. It signifies the importance of following your dreams, no matter how scary or unattainable they may seem. It reminds us, that we wanted to do it, and we did do it. And tomorrow or next week or in 5 years, if we see something we have a desire to accomplish…we will.
