He’s one of the most influential directors of his generation, and that’s no small feat when you’re still just this shy of 40.  But listening to him talk after seeing the work, I was convinced to go visit his hometown and find out what’s in the air and what’s in the water.  This site has the really kind hotels, and I’ve been looking forward to new adventures since the first one was so lovely.  It’s a very intriguing town, with a lot of nooks and crannies where pockets of culture appear suddenly.  From the outside, however, it looks like a typical town in this country, except perhaps a little more beautiful than most, and more history than the west coast.

I should probably mention that I come from the west coast.  I don’t want to sound naive, but old things are still very new to me.  There is something about a cobweb, a shadow, an eye, and a stain that reminds me simultaneously of Bjork and Bataille, but sometimes I also think the eastern seaboard has much better bread.  This is not my first time in a new place, and I feel as unsettled as I usually do when I see a Spike Jonze film.  There is an uncanny beauty to it all, and I’ve always felt something tapping at the root branches of my subconscious whenever I see his work.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s the music videos, or the spectacular film from Sendak’s book.  This is an artist who has somehow managed to forge the ability to manifest a vision without having to give up the guts or the ghost.  Typically, Lacanian filmmakers get swept under the rug so that post-structural janitors can come back later to see what happens to a pulse in this kind of weather.  At the same time, I’m not turning my head in too many directions, because his work speaks to a collective consciousness that is altogether very real.  This is one of the best parts about being in Rockville.  The others on the list have been forgotten for over a week now.
