Whether you come in from Fort Worth or Dallas you will find some luxurious and quaint hotels around Grand Prairie Texas. Click here. This little town is a suburb of to larger cities and is like their near by Mayberry. It was originally named Dechman after the person who first established the area Alexander McRae Dechman. Later as the area grew and the post office began to give service to the area, there were some confusing issues with the name so the post office made some changes. The area between Dallas and Worth Worth was affectionately called the grand prairie of Texas so they went with Grand Prairie as the name we know now.

It seems there is a prairie in every state and they are named after the terrain as well as some of the animals or events that took place on the land. It doesn’t look like Grand Prairie was named after much more than the terrain. If you look at some other prairie places in the country you will find names like Froggy Prairie which was named after the tall marsh like grass land near a school in Illinois that was putting on a spelling bee and there were so many frogs living in the grass making so much noise that the participants had to speak loudly to be heard.

Then there are the prairies that were names after the animals that filled them such as Crow Prairie, Horse Prairie and Bulls Eye Prairie. Abraham Lincoln’s father Thomas Lincoln lived on a prairie called Goose Nest Prairie but if it really had Geese on the property only father Lincoln knows. Hart Prairie in Morgan County IL was named after Baptist preacher William A Hart. He was one of the first settlers to land in the area. My favorite Hart Prairie is in Arizona and I am not sure how it got its name but it is one of the most beautiful places I have seen.
