The Dallas Cowboys have seen many great players in their decades of existence. Tony Dorsett is one of them and was their star running back for ten years. He spent his final year playing for the Denver Broncos though Cowboys fans would continue to claim him as their own. This is true even though he was born in Rochester, Pennsylvania and attended the University of Pittsburgh. Though, as is true for many star athletes, one’s place of birth and choice of universities is rarely held against them in the professional sponsorship world. And while Rochester may say that Dorsett is one of their own, most of the world associates him with the Dallas Cowboys, including the guests in a hotel Dallas.

Dorsett first gained major acclaim and recognition for his playing while he was at the university. In 1976 he was a major part of the team’s receiving the national title and he also was awarded the Heisman Trophy that year. The same year he won the UPI Player of The Year, the Walter Camp Award and the Maxwell Award. He wouldn’t finish school before achieving an all-time NCAA record for most yards rushed, a record that would stand until 1998 when it was surpassed by Ricky Williams.

In 1977 Dorsett was drafted in the first round by the Dallas Cowboys and he would play for them for the next ten years. During his first year he rushed for over 1,000 yards and made twelve touchdowns. He was awarded Rookie of the Year for his talent and efforts. In his twelve year career Dorsett ran for a total of 12,733 yards and scored 77 touchdowns. He has an incredible legacy and one of the major highlights includes his record breaking, and standing, 99 yard touchdown run against the Minnesota Vikings. Interestingly, the Cowboys only had ten players on the field during that run as the fullback was left unaware that the play had been called. Dorsett was not only respected for his field performance but also as an outstanding personality.
