Sweet Chimney

One of the most important parts of your Napoleon fireplace is the chimney. Hidden from view, nestled up in the wall, is the part of a stove that makes it all work out well. It has a few parts to it that make this possible. I suppose you have to start with the flue. This is the main component of the chimney. It is a vertical path that channels smoke and burnt debris up and out of your home. In most cases there is one chimney for each stove or other heating device. Sometimes the brick chimney contains two but usually it is one.
Then there are chimney caps. These are the caps that keep the rain out of your fireplace. They also help keep out the birds and other small animals who may want to move into your cozy home. Then there is the chimney crown. This helps water to drain away from the chimney. Another rain and water repellent piece is the chimney flashing. The part you will be the most familiar with is the chimney damper. This is the device that helps you to open and close the flue. It’s a good idea to close the flue when the fireplace is not in use so that the drafts won’t enter your home. Of course, remember to open it again when you light it up.
Another important part of the chimney is the chimney liner. It has a multi-functional use. It protects the bricks and mortar joints inside your chimney, helps the performance of the flue and makes it easier to clean. They come in Stainless steel, cast-in-place, aluminum and Terra Cotta. Then of course there is the clean out door. A special air tight door that is place where it makes it easier to clean out the flue. But this is only for stoves. The fireplace usually has a large enough space to clean out the flue.
