  • Indoor Herb Gardens in Sunny Windows

For many people across the country right now, there is snow on the ground and quite a chill in the air.  For avid gardeners this is a frustrating time.  When I lived in Chicago we had such a great, small garden on our back porch, with tomatoes, and flowers, and herbs throughout the summer, but come winter time, nothing.  We just waited in anticipation for the glorious first hints of spring.  For many people, the thought of an indoor herb garden may seem to be too difficult, but it is really a simple project.  And you do not even need a bay window to do it.  With Next Day Blinds, insulated window treatments in the form of blinds and shades, will help to keep out the cold, but let in just enough light for your oregano, parsley, thyme and rosemary to grow.

Any window on the or the west will be your best bet, letting in about five hours of sun each day.  Growing the herbs from seeds is the best way to go.  Terra cotta or clay pots are the best, as they are porous and allow the water and the air to circulate.  Small pots, about six inches in diameter are recommended, which will allow you to have the widest variety possible, especially if you space is limited.  You can plant the herbs separately or throw a mixture into one pot.  However, in throwing a mix into the pot, while the look will be interesting, just as wine grapes take on the tastes of their surrounding plants and elements, so too will the herbs will take on the tastes of each other.

I was apprehensive when I started my first indoor garden.  I had always had houseplants, but the thought of growing “outdoor” plants inside, had me questioning the greenness of my thumb.  But I picked the sunniest window, and called Next Day Blinds.  The blinds allowed the sunshine during the day, but I could close them at night and keep out the cold winter air.  My indoor garden was delightful, providing us not only with fresh herbs throughout the winter, but a fresh scent as well.
