Find a room at one of the luxurious hotels Johannesburg has to offer along the Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton City. There located in the center of the square is the bronze statue of Nelson Mandela standing proudly for freedom to all of South Africa. The statue was unveiled during the celebration of the first decade of democracy for the country. People came from all over to celebrate. This impressive monument stand for a few reasons. First it stand for the former president’s simple yet grand vision of a free South Africa. The second reason for the monument is to have a place for visitors to go and look back at all the effort that went into the creation of the Rainbow Nation. Tourists are always enthusiastic to get a photo in front of the famed statue.

Nelson Mandela was actually the first president to be elected in a new democratic election. He held office from 1994 to 1999. We was an anti-apartheid activist. The South African courts ended up convicting Mandala on charges of sabotage and other crimes he committed during his fight for freedom. He served 27 years in prison, mainly at Robben Island.  He was released in 1990 and then of course went on to become president.

The Nelson Mandela Square has become the most popular areas to visit in South Africa. Here visitors can spend the whole day and night enjoying the many things to do in the area as a whole. There are many quaint lunch and coffee cafes. Plenty of fine dining restaurants and about 93 exclusive specialty shops. It is in the heart of the financial district with the Sandton Convention Center, glorious luxury hotels and endless shops. This is also the area of the sort of little Italy of the city. Locals and visitors can find some wonderful Italian food. Have a slice of pizza as you walk around the square. So no matter why you have come to Johannesburg it really is a must experience when it comes to the Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton City.
