The E & J Gallo Winery, also known by the full first names of Earnest and Julio, is based in Modesto, California. This is not the only major food and/or beverage company to be based there, though it is certainly one of the largest and most famous. This winery is the largest exported of all wineries, included the famous Napa Valley, in the state of California. It was fundamental in establishing the Sonoma County wine regions as one of the most recognized in the world. Many of the tourists who visit California, and the city of Modesto enjoy touring the various wineries. And for guests staying in a Modesto hotel, as well as those who drive in for a day’s stay, the E & J Winery is certainly a favorite.

The winery was founded by the brothers Ernest and Julio Gallo in 1933. They first began making the wine after the repeal of the prohibition act from the grapes they had been growing and harvesting for the previous two years. During the period of prohibition, the brothers were simply growing and selling grapes. However, the vines quickly took on a new role at the formal end of it.

In the early days the brothers had to struggle against much larger and established wineries and their early start up capital was limited and small. Through an extreme amount of hard work and diligence the brothers built the winery into what it is today. It is now the largest family owned winery in the United States. They also make, market and distribute wine under other names and brands. A few of these include Louis M. Martini, Turning Leaf, Black Swan and Barefoot Wine, though there are many others. Some of their largest selling wines are the Sonoma County Chardonnay, the Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon and the Sonoma County Merlot.
